The combination of sweet, ripe strawberries and crisp, peppery basil works surprisingly well together and has become one of my favorite flavor combinations. This summery cocktail is sweet, effervescent, and perfect for sipping on a warm day.
Simple syrups are one of my favorite ways to preserve the flavor of seasonal fruit. Since developing my Strawberry Simple Syrup a few years back, I’ve found countless ways to use it. I enjoy it over fresh fruit, on waffles and pancakes, and mixed into cocktails and mocktails. Using homemade syrup in drinks makes me feel like a mixologist, plus I can control the sweetness level. I also love the way my kitchen smells as it simmers.
One summer flavor combination I’ll never get enough of is strawberry and basil. It might seem strange, but the tart sweetness of strawberries complement peppery basil in a way that just works! If you’re also hooked on this combination, I suggest checking out my recipe for Salmon with Strawberries, Balsamic, and Basil.
If you’d prefer to make this drink without alcohol, simply omit the vodka. It will still be a tasty and refreshing summer beverage.
