Alright, I’m just going to come out and say it… I’ve had an incredibly busy week. Some wonderful changes are happening here on the site. While all of these changes are positive, I’ve been swamped with work, which has prevented me from blogging as much as I’d like to. I’m happiest and most at home when I’m in the kitchen, trying out new recipes to share with you. Lately I haven’t had a spare moment to cook… which, I’ll admit, is slightly depressing. That said, I’m excited about the developments happening on my site, and I’m really looking forward to sharing them with you!
When I’m running around trying to finish a task list a mile long, it’s hard to find time to develop new recipes. This week, I’m sharing a simple Greek snack that I make when life gets too busy to cook. It’s served in Greece as a dessert, but I could eat it all day long. It’s loaded with protein, making it a great “pick me up” any time of day. Did I mention it’s gluten free?
This Greek dish is called Yiaourti Me Meli– Greek yogurt, honey, and nuts. They serve it at our favorite Greek restaurant in Malibu, which is where I learned about the dish. If you’ve never tried the flavor combination, you’re in for a real treat. I’ve given rough ingredient amounts below for one serving, but feel free to adjust any of the ingredients to taste. Sub pistachios for walnuts if you prefer. You can also add fresh fruit to the bowl– peaches, berries, whatever is ripe and seasonal. Lower the glycemic index by replacing the honey with agave nectar. Use Greek yogurt with any fat content you prefer… Greek yogurt is strained to remove excess moisture, which gives it a creamier taste and higher protein than traditional yogurt. This dish doesn’t require any cooking. Cool, creamy, tangy, sweet, a hint of spice… so much flavor, and only four ingredients. Plus, it only takes 2 minutes to make. Now that’s my kind of dessert!

Yiaourti Me Meli - Greek Yogurt, Honey and Nuts
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup Greek yogurt
- 1 tablespoon crushed walnuts
- Cinnamon to taste
- 1 tablespoon honey, more or less to taste
Instructions
- Spoon the yogurt into a small dessert dish. Sprinkle crushed walnuts over the top of the yogurt.
- You can toast the walnuts lightly in a hot skillet, if you'd like, to bring out more of their natural flavor. Sprinkle the yogurt with cinnamon and drizzle with honey. Serve.

Hi Tori – I find your views on food inspiring. Here’s a thought for you on sardines – mix a can of wild caught Baltic sardines with a little black pepper and a tablespoon of horseradish sauce. Put aside. Heat two pain de casa rolls at 180 degrees C for six minutes. Slice these in half and remove the doughy insides, which you can save to add into burghers later. Coat the rolls with Mayver’s original super spread – a mix of four nuts, chia and sesame (no added oil, salt,sugar or dairy – ie liver cleansing), fold in your sardine mix, cut in half and eat with a glass of 12% alcohol white wine – Margaret River, WA, or Marlborough, NZ, will be fine. I love this. My favorite breakfast. A Greek friend of mine introduced this to me a few years back. I really love to use orange blossom honey on it; it really adds something! I’ve never tried toasting the walnuts—good idea!

I have been making this dish for decades. However, I also add dried fruit such as cherries or cranberries,crushed banana chips,wheat germ,nuts such as cashews, pecans, almonds, walnuts, seeds such as pumpkin or sunflower ,fresh or frozen berries, granola, and top it off with a little honey or maple syrup. I vary ingredients as I see fit each time so it’s never the same. It is delicious and packed with nutrition. Don’t add extra sugar buy using sweetened fruit, use only non or low fat yogurt, use natural or organic granola and use a light hand with the honey and maple syrup. this will decrease calories, sugar ang fat. It is higher calorie made this way, so only use a rew nuts, a sprinkle of wheat germ and only one serving of fruit combined. With restraint, this can be made to be only 300 calories or so and it is oh so delicious!

Didn’t have any honey so I used a high quality Canadian Maple syrup. It really awesome.

Thanks Tori, I never come across Greet yoghurt until my daughter´s housemate often ate that !! She added anything she could find in my daughter´s fridge >:O. She ate it in the morning and lunch too. I only add in some fruit jam instead of buying the ready made yoghurt with fruits as they are far too sweet. I often eat it in the morning. Will give this recipe to my sister who eat like a beggar at dinner time !!
