Y’all. I’m so over busy. The word itself is tossed around (online and in real life) about as frequently as bless you or thank you. Only it’s not nearly as pleasant. I’m actually starting to cringe every time I hear it.

So. I’ve decided to break up with it.

That’s right. You heard me.

I’m breaking up with BUSY.

I don’t want to mistake being busy for being successful anymore and you shouldn’t either!! I’m sharing the subtle yet life-changing difference between “busy” and “productive” and an inside look at how I’m breaking up with busy FOR GOOD on the Productivity Zone!!

I see so many people burning out, stretching themselves too thin, burning the candle at both ends… all for the sake of BUSY.

And for what?

The simple answer?

To feel successful.

As a society, we’ve come to view being busy as being successful. And if we’re not busy, then we’re not doing enough.

And that’s messed up.

So, who’s ready to break up with busy with me?

HOW I’M BREAKING UP WITH BUSY: THE VOCABULARY

For starters, I’m eliminating it from my vocabulary.

(We’re talking completely cold turkey.)

I won’t be using the word “busy” here on the blog, on social media, or in real life ever again. At least, not in good context. I still plan to use it when I’m trying to make the point that busy is BAD.

Because busy IS bad. It’s so bad, it’s Brussels sprouts. It’s like a swear word. It’s VOLDEMORT. Ahem. I mean, The-B-Word-That-Shall-Not-Be-Mentioned

(Too much?)

The fact of the matter is: I don’t want to mistake being busy for being successful.

Because NEWSFLASH…

  • Busy is overwhelming.
  • Busy is stressful.
  • Busy is EXHAUSTING.
  • Busy doesn’t really get you anywhere. (#hamsterwheel)
  • Busy is unproductive.

And here’s the real kicker:

“Nobody cares how busy you are, they only care about what you get done.” – Entrepreneur.com

Whew! Did anyone else stop dead after reading that last bit? The first time I read it, I did. And now I practically want it tattooed on my forehead!

(An article by Gene Marks on Entrepreneur.com really opened my eyes to the fact that we are not busy, we’re just using it as an excuse for why we didn’t get something done. #truthbomb)

HOW I’M BREAKING UP WITH BUSY: THE MINDSET SHIFT & ACTION PLAN

Secondly, I’m done with the busy mentality.

(I’m kicking it to the curb.)

I’m training myself to reject all things busy. The word, the action, the mindset. I’m DONE with ALL of it.

It’s taken a little while, but my standard response for “how are things?” has changed from “busy” to “productive, really good and productive.”

And I’ve started backing those words with ACTIONS.

Whenever I start to feel manic and overwhelmed, I stop and check myself… before I wreck myself. #nobutreally

Busy leads to overwhelm, which leads to stress, procrastination, utter crankiness, and burn out. None of which I want to be. So, I check myself before I wreck myself. It’s the same type of mentality as thinking before speaking. I’m just choosing to be productive over busy.

Y’all. There is a MASSIVE difference between being busy and being productive. But most people miss it, because, in theory, the difference is very subtle. But the impact it makes on the day-to-day is HUGE.

Being busy means doing stuff. Being productive means getting stuff done.

Do you see the difference?

Then you’ll agree:

Productivity is so much better than busy.
